Africa is the second-largest most populous continent after Asia at about 30.3 million kilometers (or 11.7 million square miles). During the events of Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, the continent of Africa is one of the last contested territories in a world dominated by the Greater Germanic Reich, with Southern Africa presumably having strong resistance against the Afrika Korps. Bombate is a former member of the African resistance hailing from Namibia, leading several attacks before his eventual capture and imprisonment at Camp Belica.

Background[]

Little of the situation in Africa is elaborated on in Wolfenstein: The New Order, but it is mentioned in various letters and newspapers throughout the game. It is known that after World War II ended in victory for the Nazi regime in 1948, the Nazis occupied most of the North African territories, but faced harsh resistance further south, but had presumably reached as far as Tanganyika, where morale was low and soldiers often feared resistance from guerillas. Their state-of-the-art equipment, such as the Wolf-tank, were unable to deal with the sandy environments of Africa, in one instance, from a letter written by Oskar Weismuller from the 72nd Wolf-tank Division, their tank broke down following a dust-storm near the border of Tanganyika, and set up camp where they were ambushed by African "primitives", who wore stripped leather, with their faces painted red. Oskar Weismuller survived the encounter and recovered in a hospital in Dar es Salaam.[1]

Decades after the end of the war, the Nazis constructed the Gibraltar Bridge somewhere between 1956 - 1957, and opened on October 2nd 1957 in front of a large crowd of Nazi politicians and upstanding citizens within the area, with Adolf Hitler attending the inauguration of the bridge and given the honor of cutting the ribbon. [2]The Gibraltar Bridge became the largest bridge ever built, connecting mainland Europe to the continent of Africa. However, the Gibraltar Bridge also served a sinister purpose: to transport troops and various supplies to fuel the campaigns on the African front.

Wolfenstein: The New Order[]

According to two newspapers published from Casablanca on November 13th 1960, studies were recently published from a committee appointed by Adolf Hitler had "discovered" that the mortality rate in Northern Africa had dropped by 100% since the war had ended, noting that the change of the regimes of the region and the "introduction of decent German values" had attributed to the phenomenal change, while Southern Africa remained a chaotic "spawning ground for terrorists and anarchists", referring to the strong resistance in the mentioned region. It is unknown about whether or not the studies were legitimate or propaganda meant to show the investments of the Nazi regime on the African continent. [3] Another newspaper mentions "gleaming silver monoliths" when flying overhead, which are technologies being tested to transform other planets within the solar system, such as the Moon, Venus or Mars, with space engineer Faust stating that if the Sahara could be transformed into a lush garden of Eden, then could the planets outside of Earth.[4]

On November 15th 1960,[5] the Kreisau Circle in a daring assault led by William Blazkowicz attacked the Gibraltar Bridge in order to intercept a German train carrying intelligence critical to the resistance's war effort. Having acquired a device known as the Spindly Torque from the Da'at Yichud, Blazkowicz deployed the weapon against the bridge, destroying multiple spans and rendering it totally inaccessible to motorized traffic while at the same time killing hundreds and injuring thousands according to the newspapers. The destruction of the bridge likely delayed the Nazis' advance into Africa, ensuring the survival of the resistance forces there until the death of General Deathshead just days later, turning the tide of the conflict.

Bombate, a member of the Kreisau Circle, is himself a former member of the African resistance hailing from Namibia, having led several attacks on the Nazis before his eventual capture and later liberation.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood[]

After the Second American Revolution, the Nazis have gradually lost control over most of Africa as their influence crumbles away in the world. General Walter Winkler is known for his bravery on the Northern African Front, where he personally fought back scores of "rabid degenerates".[6]

By the events of Wolfenstein: Youngblood, the Nazis still held control over Northern Africa, but their firm grip on the region has already begun to crumble, as a result of the war on the North African Front. The Nazis, presumably as a result of heavy losses, have begun to recruit soldiers from all across cities in Europe, such as Neu-Paris, broadcasting propaganda urging Parisians to sign up for the front at their local military recruitment center.[7] Those working in military factories were forced to work overtime, in an attempt to meet the deadline of shipping military vehicles to the African front.[8]

Abby states that the Nazis have just lost a large battle over the Gibraltar Strait, implying that not only has the Reich lost Africa but whoever is fighting them is on the verge of crossing from Africa into Spain.
