Animated Hans Grosse

Hans Grosse, the first boss of Wolfenstein 3D

A boss in Wolfenstein 3D is a significant computer-controlled enemy that when defeated allows the player to complete an episode, mission, or the game itself.

Depending on what difficulty level is chosen by the player, the boss will have a different amount of HP.

In the original Wolfenstein 3D, there are 6 episodes and there is a boss battle on every floor 9 of each episode. In Spear of Destiny and in the Spear of Destiny mission packs, all bosses battles are fought on floors 5, 10, 16, 18 and 21.

The appearance of some bosses are not limited to these floors though. In some floors, a boss may reappear, but the appearance of the boss is usually not as an important of a battle to have as specific boss floors are. For example, Hans Grosse is the boss for the first episode Escape from Castle Wolfenstein in E1M9 which is a boss level, but also appears again on missions E2M8 and E6M10 which are not specific boss levels.

There are 3 types of death behaviors for bosses. Killing a boss will either start a DeathCam™ animation, a gold key will be dropped, or the Spear of Destiny outro animation will be played. The choice between the three options is dictated by the level.

Boss death behavior[]

DeathCam™ death[]

DeathCam deaths are unlike normal enemies boss death sprites in that they are single sided animations. When the initial boss death animation is complete, the game stops, and the players screen is blanked. Then text appears over the players view which reads "LET'S SEE THAT AGAIN!". Then the players view is completely moved to close up view of the boss. Then the words "DeathCam™" are flashed on the top of the screen as the boss death animation plays again. After the DeathCam finishes the level is complete.

Gold key drop death[]

In this style of death, there is no replaying of the bosses death animation. The boss simply drops a key and the player can carry on with the level. The gold key that is dropped is used to exit the level.

Spear of Destiny outro[]

In Spear of Destiny and its mission packs — on the final bosses of each pack — there is a different animation that is played that is unique to the Spear of Destiny series. When one of these bosses are killed, the players screen is blanked out and there is an animation played of B.J. with music along with it. The animation is of B.J holding a chaingun and the Spear of Destiny. Music is played which at first sounds like victory music, and after a few seconds changes to what sounds like some kind of defeat or losing music as B.J falls toward the ground. After the animation and song ends, the level is complete.
