The French State was a puppet state of Third Reich. Its predecessor was Vichy France. On 7 September 1944, following the Allied invasion of France, the remainders of the Vichy government cabinet fled to Germany and established a puppet regime in exile in the so-called Sigmaringen enclave. The rump government finally fell when the city was taken by the Free French army in April 1945. When the Greater German Reich steamrolled all of its enemies in Europe after the German Army became increasingly advanced in recent years. The original puppet government was soon reinstated by the Nazi party as a new collaborationist government.
