Krzysztof Oliwa is the father of Anya Oliwa and a Polish doctor who saves B.J. in 1946, after he washes up on the shore of the Baltic Sea.

Background[]

A Polish intellectual and doctor, Dr Oliwa has been running the Maławieś Psychiatric Hospital for decades, continuing the family tradition. Under the Nazi occupation, he was permitted to continue at his post, in return for providing Wilhelm Strasse (Deathshead) with whatever test subjects he might require. He continued at this post for years, impotently watching as Nazi goons hauled away his patients for experiments, trading them for the safety of his family, most importantly his daughter, Anna. He was completely unaware of her other life, as Ramona, seducing and killing Nazi soldiers.[1]

Notably, it's unclear just how a Polish doctor would be permitted to continue living, much less working, as Polish intellectuals were targeted by the Nazis in Operation Tannenberg and murdered to eliminate any potential leaders of resistance and begin the process of turning Poles into slaves. One explanation is that he could have been a Volksdeutsche, though the use of Polish at the asylum (although we do see him speak fluent German to Keller) and in Maławieś would contradict that, as Volksdeutsche were supposed to be Germanized and any non-German traces scrubbed. Another is that he was a personal friend of Deathshead, and Maławieś enjoyed a status akin to a reservation.

He was killed by the Nazis in 1960, when Friedrich Keller shut down the asylum and had his troops execute the remaining patients and personnel. His death provides the catalyst for B.J. Blazkowicz's awakening, however, and the eventual crumbling of the Nazi Empire.

Interactions[]

The New Order[]

After Blazkowicz is rescued by German fishermen, he is brought to Krzysztof's office. Krzysztof and his wife both determine that removing the shrapnel from B,J's brain would be fatal and opt to send him to the asylum. Krzysztof is seen as a man who genuinely cares and helps the patients in his asylum, as B.J. describes him as "always raising hell" but in the end relenting to Deathshead's Nazi goons. He is saddened and furious at the closing of his asylum, and attempts to fight off the Nazi goon killing the patients in the room after he beats his wife. Unfortunately, Krzysztof fails and is shot and killed by the soldier. His death was shortly avenged by B.J., who awoke from his vegetative state and slit the "Nazi scum's" throat.

Appearance and personality[]

Krzysztof is one of the few beacons of kindness in the Nazi controlled Poland, as he genuinely wants to help and rehabilitate his patients always raising hell when Deathshead's goons come to take suitable patients away for his research. He has a good relationship with his wife and daughter, and seems to be quite proud of Anya. His good will, though, led to his death alongside his wife at the hands of one of Deathshead's goons when his asylum was shut down.

He is bilingual, as he speaks both Polish to Anya and Róża and German to Keller. This was likely a result of him being a doctor, as it is quite common for physicians to know more than one language. His knowledge of German could also have been related to his situation, as his asylum was under control by Nazi Germany and thus needed to know German in order to talk to patients and overseers alike.
