- "The Lasergewehr fires high energy laser beams that if focused on one spot can overheat thin sheets of metal until they melt."
- ―Description of the Lasergewehr.[src]
The Lasergewehr (lit. "Laser Rifle") later named the Laserhammer (lit. "Laser Hammer") in Wolfenstein: Youngblood, is a heavy weapon that is first introduced in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, The Lasergewehr is one of the new primary weapon for Super Soldier 1961, along with taking the role that the MG-60 had in Wolfenstein: The New Order as a heavy emplacement weapon. Like the Dieselgewehr, the Ubergewehr, or the Hammergewehr, it is classified as a heavy weapon that can deal great damage to armored enemies and mechanical units.
Description[]
The New Colossus[]
The Lasergewehr is a Nazi energy weapon in use by 1961. Lasergewehrs are painted black, and consisting of a metal chassis likely containing a kind of focusing crystal or lens in the front of the weapon, and a rudimentary mechanical stock. The body of the weapon is covered in wires and electrical components, as well as a geared mechanism in the middle of the stock. When the Lasergewehr is charging, these gears spin, emitting a red glow and exhibiting red lightning. This may indicate that the gears act as part of the laser pump components and that the lasing medium of the Lasergewehr requires a large amount of energy to function.
It fires a red laser beam capable of melting metal sheets or vaporizing biomass. The firing mechanism requires a short time to fully cycle up, after which the weapon can be fired in quick bursts or as a sustained beam, the latter rapidly draining its power reserves.
The Lasergewehr requires an electrical charge to function and the many locations where it is found contain multiple charging stations. It can hold up to 400 kWh of charge once the Heavy Weapons Kill perk is maxed out to level 5. The Lasergewehr’s size and weight slows the player's movement and prevents it from being added into the inventory as a permanent, swappable weapon. It can be found as a stationary weapon emplacement or dual wielded by Super Soldiers.
It is also noticeable by its iconic sound, and melting opponents in seconds.
Youngblood[]
Laserhammer are still in service in 1980 and remain the same as their 1961 versions, just now found in a more gunmetal grey paint scheme.
History and Locations[]
The New Colossus[]
In The New Colossus, it is often found mounted on tripods in strategic points, hidden in wooden supply crates, inside weapon armories, or being duel wielded by Super Soldiers. B.J. uses a Lasergewehr after killing the first Super Soldier on the Ausmerzer.
Youngblood[]
In Youngblood, it is duel-wielded by Laser-Supersoldat while still being found in wooden supply crates scattered around Neu-Paris, or mounted on tripods in front of checkpoints or high value installations.
Strategy[]
The New Colossus[]
- The weapon is normally carried by Super Soldiers or mounted on a tripod, where it contains around 200 kWh of charge (400 kWh of charge with the Heavy weapon kills perk maxed) after dismounting.
- Lasergewehr has no recoil and has perfect accuracy, and thus Lasergewehrs are thus the best heavy weapon in New Colossus when fighting a long-ranged battle.
- The Lasergewehr can destroy robotic enemies quickly (e.g. Zitadelle, Laserhund, etc.) in comparison to standard weaponry.
- It's best to have this heavy weapon if you have a choice of them, as charging stations are everywhere and there are (most of the time) ammo for it or the LaserKraftWerk.
- Similar to the Dieselgewehr, readying the weapon grants the player enough time to kill an enemy in front of them. An example is stopping a Super Soldier in its track, killing them quickly.
- The only downside to the Lasergewehr is that it does not fire immediately, needing a few seconds to spin up its geared laser pump to fire.
- However, players can keep the the geared laser pump spinning by holding down the secondary-fire button, completely negating that drawback in exchange for being limited to walking speed.
- Overall the Lasergewehr is probably the most versatile heavy weapons in New Colossus: its perfectly accurate hitscan nature makes it effective in most situations, while making it the best weapon where the situation necessitates long range combat such as the corridor section in the first mission at the Ausmerzer. Because of its accuracy and high rate of damage, it is easy to score multiple kills with the Lasergewehr to fully achieve the heavy weapon perk and double its ammunition. While firing the weapon continually drains power quickly, it doesn't take too much power to down an individual soldier. Combining this with secondary-fire to conserve power, the Lasergewehr can last a while without needing to recharge. While the Dieselgewehr is better suited at mid-ranged combat against groups of soldiers than the Lasergewehr, the Lasergewehr can handle that task without too much difficulty if Blazkowicz can connect with multiple enemies quickly.
- Lasergewehrs are also the safest option when engaging the Supersoldaten if enough distance can be made. While dual wielded Schockhammers and dual wielded Sturmgewehrs with armor piercing upgrade have the potential to take down Supersoldaten more quickly, the former requires Blazkowicz to close the distance and put himself at risk (especially against ones wielding Hammergewehrs), while the latter's spread means it is possible to miss a few shots at longer distances which are safer.
Youngblood[]
- Players are unable to wield the Laserhammer until they have accrued enough XP from enemy kills and Supply Crates to reach Level 4 and unlock the Bigger Guns Ability.
- Conversely players will be unable to add the Laserhammer to their inventory until they reach Level 20 and unlock the Extreme Gun Pocket Ability.
- Youngblood has a weapon mastery system for all weapons. The Laserhammer will gain a +4% damage per level, with each level requiring 40 enemies kill per level. With a max level cap of 25, it requires 1000 enemy kills to max out its damage buff of +100%.
- Ammo is very scarce and limited due to the removal of charging stations in Youngblood making it a weapon to only use for certain high level enemies (e.g. Laserhund, Zitadelle & the Zerstörer). That being said, players can find ammo both from downed Laser-Supersoldat, or from wooden supply crates scattered around the districts of occupied Paris.
- Laserhammer still has the downside of having a noticeable delay in its primary firing mode due the required spin-up of its geared laser pump to charge the weapon. Holding down the secondary-fire button will keep the geared laser pump spinning and will keep the Laserhammer in a immediate condition to fire in exchange for being limited to slower walking speed.
