An MG 42 guarded by a portable shield

Portable shields (German: tragbaren Schilden) appear in Wolfenstein. They are Veil-powered devices used by the Germans as cover or to block off roads. They can be destroyed by shooting the Veil canister at their bases or melee-ing them from the other side. The player can shoot through them by using Empower or even use it to turn against them for your advantange. They first appear in the Hospital mission in the test run of the Empower ability and appear in every level after that and in Isenstadt.

Sometimes, a soldier can be seen running with the shield canisters in one hand. Killing may either cause them to drop the canister or cause the canister to explode.
