Obergruppenführer Wolfgang Statz is a minor antagonist in Wolfenstein. An important member of the SS visiting the city of Isenstadt for an inspection tour, he occupies a lavish residential estate in said city. He is also the supervisor of Oberstgruppenführer Viktor Zetta.

He is first seen in the game during the third side mission "Warehouse" and he is killed by B.J. during the fourth side mission "Officer's House". He carries a MP40 machine gun.

Appearance

Wolfgang Statz is a middle-aged man of stocky build. He has brown, greying hair and a beard.

History

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Wolfgang Statz is first seen during the ending of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, when he notifies his superior, Heinrich Himmler that the latter’s private airplane was ready for takeoff. After a brief silence, Statz added that Adolf Hitler was expecting Himmler’s arrival in Berlin, to which Himmler simply responded in an abrasive tone of voice “Ja, Ja!!”. Statz then proceeded to accompany Himmler to Berlin.

Wolfenstein

Wolfgang Statz returns with a more significant role in Wolfenstein, where he first appears in the Warehouse side mission, during which William J. Blaskowicz encounters him during his mission. When Statz spots him, a soldier urges Statz to seek shelter, as he was too important an asset for the Third Reich to risk, to which Statz notifies his subordinates that should his attention be required, he would be at his residence.

He later appears in the Officer's House side mission where he is under heavy guard by the soldiers that live there. Armed with an MP40, he hides in a hidden compartment embedded in one of the bookcases in the house’s library area, guarding a codebook for translating ciphers. Upon being discovered by B.J, he attempts to take a stand against the former but is promptly killed, and thus his efforts were ultimately in vain. He is not referenced after he is killed, implying that his superiors have disavowed all knowledge of his actions or existence.

Personality

Wolfgang Statz is a by-the-book commander who is fiercely loyal to the Third Reich, as seen in the ending of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, he reports directly to Heinrich Himmler. He is also shown to have low tolerance for mistakes or infractions such as inebriation on duty. He also appears to be an infidel as it is implied through a letter from his mistress that he was cheating on his wife with Bridgette. This, along with several women in states of undress found within his house, Indicate an unknown level of sexual depravity.

Trivia

• He appears to be the same officer seen speaking to Heinrich Himmler at the end of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Thus, he is one of very few characters to be featured in both games.
• The mission objectives from the journal for the "Officer's House" side mission repeatedly refer to him as General Kreig for unknown reasons. This may have been his original name that was changed during development.
• He is the only Nazi to wear a correct World War II Waffen-SS uniform in Wolfenstein. All other SS personnel wear either heavy fictionalized uniforms or the infamous Allgemeine-SS black uniforms.
• He can not be gibbed.
• He has a mistress named Brigitte.
• it is unclear who provided his voice.
